After falling to a third Premier League defeat in their last four matches on Sunday evening, going down 1-0 at home to Burnley, Arsenal will be desperate to seal a return to winning ways against Southampton on Wednesday night.
A second half own-goal from Gunners skipper Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang handed the Clarets all three points, condemning Arsenal to a sixth defeat in their last eight league outings, a run of form which has seen them score just two goals.Sunday's defeat was the latest knockout blow head coach Mikel Arteta has had to deal with, the Spaniard growing under increasing pressure from the club's supporters to turn the club's fortunes around.
With Arsenal struggling to buy a win at this moment in time, a clash with high-flying Southampton is the last thing Arteta could have done with. The Saints, who have been one of the Premier League's surprise packages so far this season, have won their last two matches, as well as suffering just one defeat in their last 10 league games.
With that in mind, Arsenal's players need to produce a much-improved performance at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday evening.
On Tuesday, both Arteta and his players were working hard at their London Colney training base in an attempt to get themselves in the best possible shape for the visit of Ralph Hasenhuttl's troops.
Luiz eyes return
Having missed the Gunners' last-four matches due to a head injury, following a collision with Wolverhampton Wanderers' Raul Jimenez last month, Brazilian centre-back David Luiz could return to the squad for the visit of Southampton.
Though the Brazilian is often a figure that divides opinion, his leadership and experience qualities have been missed at the back in recent weeks, something former Tottenham Hotspur man Jermaine Jenas spotted following Sunday's defeat to Burnley.
However, Luiz could be set to return to the starting line-up against the Saints, with the Gunners crying out for order at the back after failing to register a clean-sheet in all four of the matches he missed.
But having been pictured participated in Tuesday's training session at London Colney, the former Chelsea man will be hoping to earn a spot in the starting line-up and aim to help Arsenal record a much-needed victory.
